The St. Olaf women’s soccer team battled the University of St. Thomas at Rolf Mellby Field on Oct. 6, a blustery Saturday afternoon. Despite going into two 10-minute overtimes, the game ended in a 0-0 tie.
The two teams battled back and forth for all 110 minutes of play, with neither side dominating the other for any significant amount of time. The Oles finished with 12 shots on goal, compared to nine for the Tommies.
“We knew that if we played the way we’re capable of and the way we played last week against St. Ben’s and Eau Claire that we’d give ourselves a good chance to win,” Head Coach Jeremy Driver said. When asked about any adjustments made after the scoreless first half, he said, “We just talked about trying to increase our work rate, win the individual battles and connect more passes.”
Goaltender Nora Forbes ’14 had two close saves at the beginning of the first overtime to prevent St. Thomas from leaving with the win.
“Actually, [the ball] hit me in the face,” she said about one of the overtime saves. Forbes finished with six saves.
The Oles’ scoring drought continued as they played Augsburg College to a similar 0-0 draw on Oct. 9. This time, the opposing Auggies held the advantage in shots on goal eight to the Oles’ five. However, neither team was able to capitalize on scoring chances during the 110 minutes of play.
As a result of the draw, St. Olaf’s record stands at 5-5-3, 3-2-2 in the MIAC. The Oles are currently tied with the Auggies for fourth place in the conference.
The Ole women travel to St. Paul, Minn. to face Macalester College today. The Scots’ 2-3-1 MIAC record places them at a three-way tie for fifth in the conference.
Next up is an Oct. 17 nonconference contest at UW-River Falls. When asked about what the team needs to work on for these upcoming games, Driver simply said, “scoring goals.”
