The St. Olaf women’s basketball team made the trip down to Decorah, Iowa to face Luther College on their home court on Saturday, Nov. 23. The Oles led in the first half after a slew of successful 3-pointers but were robbed in the second half by a Luther run. The non-conference basketball game ended with a 71-52 victory for Luther.
At the end of the first half, St. Olaf was leading 29-27 after a 5-for-12 shooting performance from the arc. Afton Wolter ’16 got nine points after successfully scoring three 3-pointers from behind the line.
With 17:48 left in the game, the Oles extended their lead to 37-31, but then Luther scored 11 points in a row. Luther’s run stole the lead and the win from St. Olaf.
Taylor Johnson of Luther scored the most points in the game with 19, followed by Lyndsi Woolems with 14. For the Oles, Elise Raney ’14 scored the most points with 12, followed by Kim Cerjan ’16 with 11. Nikki Frogner ’15 scored nine points before sustaining an injury that took her out of the game.
Brittany Webber ’14 reflected on her team’s disappointment after the game. “The team was obviously upset with how the game went,” she said. “First of all, we lost one of our key post players, Nikki Frogner. Secondly, we didn’t respond the way that we wanted to. We seemed to lack passion in the second half and it showed. This was a disappointment for us.”
St. Olaf went on to open conference play on Dec. 3, defeating Carleton 73-70. Next up, the Oles travel to Minneapolis to face off against conference opponent Augsburg College on Dec. 7.
