On the warm afternoon of April 21, the St. Olaf women’s tennis team cruised to a comfortable 9-0 victory over MIAC foes Macalester College at the Carlson Courts. The Oles carried on their strong form from two days earlier, when they defeated Concordia College by an identical scoreline.
St. Olaf raced out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play, with the number two and number three doubles pairs scoring strong 8-4 and 8-0 wins respectively. The closest match came at the top spot, where Lisa Hall ’16 and Maya McGibbon ’16 recorded an 8-6 victory.
Singles play was even more straightforward for the Oles, with no player dropping more than four games in a set. Hall notched her second win of the day at the number one singles position with a 6-0, 6-3 scoreline. Kristi Kroker ’15 won the first set of her match 6-3, before cruising to a 6-0 second set win at number two singles.
At third singles, MacGibbon fought out a tough first set before overwhelming her opponent in a 6-4, 6-0 win. Erin Hynes ’15 had no trouble at fourth singles, winning 6-1, 6-1.
“I really played the net well today,” Hynes said. “I was even able to incorporate some serve and volley-style play into my game.”
Lizzie Carlson ’14 recorded a win in the closest singles match of the day, dropping six games on her way to a 6-4, 6-2 win at fifth singles. Mary Eide ’17 capped the day for the Oles with a comfortable 6-1, 6-0 win at sixth singles.
The Oles now sit at fifth place in the MIAC with a 5-3 record in conference and a 6-3 record overall. They will be looking to improve their position over the upcoming last week of MIAC competition.
