The mysterious blue pills responsible for three drug overdoses in Northfield last week have been determined to be Carfentanil, a “very potent, potentially lethal synthetic opioid,” Northfield Police Department wrote in a press release on Thursday, March 1.
The drug had been disguised to look like “Oxy,” a nickname for Oxycontin, Oxycodone or Percocet, which are all opioid-based pain medications.
“Carfentanil is up to 10,000 times more potent than morphine,” the press release read. “… Unfortunately, there are many examples of black market pills manufactured to look like legitimate prescription narcotics. There is no way for the public to know what these (illegally obtained) pills actually contain.”
The Northfield Police Department encourages anyone in possession of these drugs to turn them into the police for testing. According to the press release, “cooperating with law enforcement may save lives and will not result in prosecution.”
