The Manitou Messenger had the opportunity to interview St. Olaf golfer Kristian Leik Woie ’19. Leik Woie is a senior majoring in economics from Stavanger, Norway. Leik Woie answered some questions and shared his thoughts on the spring season.
Q: What are your thoughts on the spring season thus far?
A: We have played one tournament this spring so far, which was the annual rivalry match versus Carleton, playing for the rusty putter. We also had our annual spring break trip to South Carolina. For the team, the trip is a highlight of the year.
Q: How do you and your team deal with the sporatic and unaccommodating nature of Minnesota’s winters?
A: With golf being so dependent on the weather, it is tough to handle the spring weather here in Minnesota. Thankfully, St. Olaf built an indoor facility the fall of 2017, which helps accommodate practice needs a lot. Other than that, during the winter months, we do other things like intramural basketball, focus on school and competitive gaming.
Q: Who is your favorite professional golfer?
A: My favorite golfer is my friend Viktor Hovland. He is still an amateur, though he’ll probably turn pro this summer. For pro golfers, I like Tiger Woods and Rory Mcllroy.
Q: What are your plans after graduating from St. Olaf?
A: My student visa expires, so I am returning to Norway. I plan to do freelance work, golf on the Norwegian tour and just relax for a bit. Next fall, I will apply for an internship that Norwegian embassies offers twice per year.
Q: Which is your favorite St. Olaf sports team outside of the Golf team? Which athlete do you love watching the most?
A: After living with some of the lads on the team my sophomore year, I have to say the men’s basketball team. They are a phenomenal sports team that represents St. Olaf College to the fullest.
I love watching #42 the most. He is a fan favorite and is always smiling. Great athlete.
Q: Do you have any “pre game” rituals before starting your round?
A: During my warmup, I sometimes call home (to Norway) to talk business or fantasy football.
