The Quarry, St. Olaf’s literary and fine arts magazine, will be publishing a special “Enviro-zine” inspired by the climate strike that happened on campus and across the world earlier this fall.
“We want to give people the opportunity to keep the conversation rolling about [the strike] and provide maybe a different kind of platform to discuss or express views about environmental issues,” said Thomas Hardy ’20, executive editor of The Quarry.
“There’s a lot of environmental challenges in the world. We’re at this moment when more and more people are realizing that climate change and ecological crises are reaching an emergency state and that we really need to act now or better yet several decades ago,” Hardy said. “It’s easy to forget about all that stuff going on while you’re on campus and it’s easy to forget about environmental injustices.”

Hardy said one of the goals of this publication is to get people to break out of the St. Olaf bubble mindset and really engage creatively with the global climate movement. He believes that art is really powerful and an ingredient to bring about positive change.
The Quarry also hopes to juxtapose environmental issues with environmental celebrations by featuring submissions that highlight the beauty of nature.
The magazine is looking for written work and visual art, but also encourages people interested in music, video, dance and other multimedia content to submit.
“We want to find ways to include [multimedia content], whether that’s a QR code on the print publication or a link to it on our website,” Hardy said.
The print edition will have a smaller scale and budget than The Quarry’s normal spring edition in order to give a platform to more students and give more of an opportunity to tackle relevant themes and issues.
